America was an undiscovered land with all most unlimited natural resources.
The European nations were using the new world as a cash cow.
The soil was rich enough to grow tobacco and cotton. These two crops were huge in creating wealth in Europe. This set the stage for many European countries to become filthy rich.
Which is why they fought over it so much. They were able to supply their armies with this money and thus became huge through military expansion. They dominated in military expansion (India, Africa, Vietnam, China, South America, the caribbean, Canada, Mexico)
